Castle Ward (The Winterfell after the pilot episode) In my opinion, one of the most exciting of all the Game of Thrones filming locations in Europe is Castle Ward. (Home to Winterfell and where we are introduced to key characters in S1E1 Winter is Coming). Castle Ward is a 16th-century tower that sits on 820 walled acres of gardens and woodland.
